One Vision's Long Journey into Reality

A diary of my arduous process to develop, finance and produce a totally independent, digital, feature film.  Come along for the ride, comment if you like, and maybe we’ll learn something, and of course have a little fun.  Originally I gave myself from March 15, 2005 to September 15, 2006 to turn my dream and vision into reality, with only my imagination to guide me.  Since we all know film development can be unpredictable and full of unanticipated obstacles, a self-imposed deadline should not jeopardize the project's quality.  My new timeline will remain more flexible and production will commence when the script is where it needs to be in order to tell an engaging and original story.  Check in regularly for my ongoing progress ...  JAD

June 6, 2007 - New Eyes

A shooter and more populace to shoot ...

Finally got me a cinematographer, Michael Hardwick.  'Bout time, huh?  Are you ready, Michael?  'Cause we start shooting at the end of next month, so we got to get rolling.  New official start date is July 26, with formal prep starting a couple weeks before that.  Of course several of the keys will start before then ...

We've also got some casting news to spread around; joining Erin is Steve London as Ambrose, Najarra Townsend as Sofie, Mitchell Presas as Troy, Robert Pike Daniel as Shaemus, and Christian Carroll as Ryan.  We have two more principals to cast, and are currently in negotiation with one of them.  So, more on that next time, but I'm very happy with our cast and expect some amazing things from them ...

And finally, I'm in the middle of about fifteen different tasks, some of which I've already mentioned and others, well, I'm still trying to figure out.  It seems now that I'm having less time to write in this blog, so am not sure how often I will be checking in.  I will certainly try, but as you can imagine I'm up to my neck in it.  And of course the film comes first, and that is my total and complete focus in life right now and the rest of the summer ...

Oh, I almost forgot.  I have to make a run up to Shasta Sunday both for the film and to talk to the logging operation raping the forest next to our property.  I got the word that they might be cutting trees down on our property.  Right, exactly on the property we will be shooting our film.  Boy, all I needed was another headache in the middle of all this.  The old adage is true, when it rains it pours.  I just wished it really was rain falling, and not those majestic pines and firs dropping down ...

June 13, 2007 - More News

What is this, a sci-fi convention? ...

We just signed Gary Graham for the male lead, who most of you probably know from Alien Nation and Star Trek:Enterprise.  So, now we got Buck Rogers meets Star Trek, on Mt. Shasta.  Maybe a quick rewrite, huh?  At the end of the film, some spaceships fly over the mountain peak and beam them aboard, never to heard from again.  Maybe the Lemurians took them to a new planet?  Ah well ...

On other fronts the local media is picking up on us.  There was an article in the Mt. Shasta Herald yesterday, and today a reporter from the Siskiyou Daily News interviewed me.  A week from Monday a reporter from the Herald is going to interview me.  I also understand that the Daily Tidings, the paper in Ashland, OR had a story.  We'll be listed in the trades soon, as well as IMDB.  And we have a new film website up - www.dreamsawake.tv.  It's very basic now, but as we progress there should be lots of good stuff there ...

For everyone's information, we'll be casting bit parts in Ashland on Saturday, June 23 and in Mt. Shasta on Sunday, June 24.  Probably at a metaphysical library in Ashland and a Best Western motel in Shasta.  We got sixteen bits to fill.  See you there? ...

The last couple days me and Brion, the line producer, trekked around the mountain trying to lock in some locations.  Not that easy, matching specific script needs to specific locations we need up there.  CGI, anyone? ...

June 28, 2007 - Oh My, It's Been A While

Scrunching time and not being in the now ...

Time for that time-warp program.  You know, the one that allows you to get done in a 24-hour day what it would normally take 30.  Yes, starting out about behind and never catching up?  Well, we're pushing that edge, I have faith that these things sort themselves out.  It's just being in the middle of all that doesn't usually inspire any sense of strong security.  But hell, if we wanted to be secure we wouldn't be making a film, would we?  Right ...

Auditions, both scheduled and open, happened in Ashland, OR last Saturday and in Mt. Shasta on Sunday.  Believe it or not, we had almost 150 people show up.  That certainly exceeded our expectations, and it looks like we're going to be able to cast most of our bit parts out of these castings.  Twelve out of fourteen was pretty good.  Now for those last two ...

Another article about yours truly in the Mt. Shasta Herald this Wednesday.  The reporter interviewed me at a local restaurant, and I have to admit he did a good job.  Thanks Paul.  He'll probably come out during production and get a few shots and a few more stories ...

Hey, we're finally listed in IMDB.  So that makes us official, huh?

Lots going on now.  Still searching for an Art Director.  After much discussion, we decided we needed that instead of a Production Designer, which seems a bit like splitting hairs, but of course there is a difference.  About ready to get a production office and searching furious to bring aboard the rest of the crew.  Looks like our camera department is pretty set, and still working on the art department.  We also brought on board a Co-Producer, who was also our Casting Director, Susan Johnston.  She believed in the project so much, she just couldn't leave us, huh?  Locations are still a challenge, but we're getting there.  Lots of logistics getting worked out, the details which are probably pretty boring.  But hey, we're becoming a real production, and getting ready to fly ...

More later, hopefully with not such a long break ...
